(My
title sucks I know. These will be my first attempt to give a book review (well
I don’t think it’s one so here it is. And I love the main topic which is being
Flirty. )
Everyone has an Ericka Barcelona in us.
I know eyebrows are now almost
exchanging places as the mind squeezed out every memory in there trying to find
the familiarity of this girl’s name. But
I am way too ecstatic to say that Ericka Barcelona lives in every fearless
girl’s heart. Yeah...I know I am talking in riddles (and I intend to talk I
riddles just for this paragraph: P). Well, the truth is Ericka Barcelona is the
lead character of my recent fun read. Well, the book’s title really caught my
eye and for some weird reason I feel epileptic at that time in the middle of National
Bookstores’ Filipino fiction section. The title is “Every Girls Guide to
Flings” and it just made my day. Haha! I am already itching to rip its plastic
cover while falling in line to pay for it at the cashier. I don’t know why but
my mind is inclined to read “flirty” stuff. And maybe because back in college
(I’m still in my cocoon in high school) I am one person who definitely loves to
have crushes. Yes. Crushes. As in lots and lots of crushes. I don’t
really know but I just love basking at the pleasure of being “kilig” all the
time. It makes me feel young and alive and it takes out my mind from the
pressure the school is giving me. It is an outlet and I am thankful I have such
outlet.
Just like Ericka, whose
struggles are the same as mine, I love being flirty. Not the negative flirty
kind but the kind that blatantly says “Hey, I am flirty for myself and not
because I want attention”. I believe in self empowerment and it could be a
surprising lift when at times you feel so down close to kissing the earth’s
crust. I love Ericka’s straight forward honesty towards herself and towards the
people around her. One thing’s for sure. She’s not one of the Plastics (the
antagonists of the movie Mean Girls) and that is a big deal. She lives so
honestly that it became her weakest point. Well I am not really an excellent
giver of book reviews so I guess I’ll opt on giving pointers instead.
So this
is for me only. I am not generalising everything here’s why reading Evert Girls
Guide to Flings by Marla Miniano will make your mood go up to Mt. Everest. I
have decided to give positive ones though and find out for yourself what you
don’t like.
1. FLIRTY – Super! If you want to be re-oriented on how it is to be a flirt then
go ahead. At the end of it you’ll most likely have a better view of being
flirty anyway. And oh! I am almost tempted to have flings to try it myself. O_O
Haha.
2. FUN – It will never bore you. In fact it will make you cranky. Kidding!
The truth is you will get involved in Ericka’s diva-ish and the-hell-I-care
attitude that’ll make it all the more fun and crazy.
3. FABULOUS – Aside from the fact that our heroine is described as one gorgeous
16-year-old who-looked-like-a-stunning-mature-for-her-age girl she has also the
curves at the right places. (Bitter! She probably has more boobs than I am.)
Well, she carries herself with grace in every SOS situation and that is the
true meaning of “fabulous for me”. She
got spunk!
4. NORMAL – Wonder why? It’ll show you that what she’s going through is normal
for every girl, good or bad. It’s the same dilemmas that we are suffering from
house problems to school problems to circle of friends’ problem and to self
problem. It’s like a part of us printed on a book. So definitely every girl
reading this book can relate.
So probably,
here’s what my mind can think as the best reason why this book could make or
break your view on flirty girls. Good thing, this one here is the good kind of
bad. And gasp! We could learn a lesson or two about being who we are and
accepting it with a full embrace. J
